PRAYER WORKS

... Dancehall unruly boss was always close to God

He may refer to himself as the unruly boss but dancehall artiste Popcaan is more than just the hardcore deejay that many see.

About two decades ago, Popcaan, whose given name is Andrae Sutherland, penned a letter to God.

"Dear God, I know you are fine. I'm asking you please to let me prosper in life. And please Lord let my grandmother and grandfather live to inherit whatever I get in life," the letter read. "Lord please let my big brother and sister do inherit what I get also. Let even my mother and father inherit too Lord. This is my prayer. Your son, Andrae Sutherland," the letter read.

His grandfather, Webster Sutherland, stumbled upon the letter sometime last week and handed the note to his grandmother, Gwenneth Sutherland, who called him about it.

"She called me crying and asking if I remember it. She was very emotional and thankful that God answered the prayer I made so long ago," Popcaan, 27, said.

The 'Where We come From' deejay said the persons mentioned in the letter helped to groom him into the man he is today.

"It wasn't easy when I was growing up, things did rough and everybody weh mi mention go through di rough times too. Mi always say to myself dat when mi make it anything mi have dem fi ave it too and mi glad say mi in a position to help mi family now," he said.

powerful

He also explained that from a very young age, he was made to understand the power of prayer.

"My grandmother made sure we knew that prayer was powerful and that God was real and it was important to keep him close," he said.

Convinced that there is power in prayer, Popcaan said he has sought to instill in his children, that there is value in prayer.

"Everybody affi know God fi themselves but mi make sure dat dem know that dem affi pray," he said.

And not only is Popcaan convinced that prayer works, he holds firm to the Proverb that there death and life are in the power of the tongue.

"I understand that my words are very powerful ... Mi affi know what's coming out of my mouth because when I say things it normally come out exactly how I say it and that's why I don't talk or sing about certain things," Popcaan.
